SMART R8 CONTROL
version 1.41
Copyright (c) 1992-94 FineWare
Thank you for your interest in Smart R8 Control. The Smart R8 Control pro-
gram is designed to both simplify and enhance shortwave listening on the
Drake R8 Communications Receiver. Smart R8 Control integrates a database
of frequency information with the power of remotely controlling the re-
ceiver. Smart R8 Control emulates most of the R8's front panel controls,
adding the capabilities of tuning by user selected increments and control-
ling an attached tape recorder; while adding the name of the station you're
listening to and a dual 24-hour clock (local/UT) to the continuous display.
Aside from displaying the station you're tuned to, Smart R8 Control allows
smart queries to the integrated frequency database. Using an internally
designed windowing environment, Smart R8 Control allows the user to choose
from a list of stations broadcasting at that time. Once a station is se-
lected, a separate window is created containing that station's list of cur-
rent frequencies and target areas. The user can now automatically tune the
receiver by selecting a frequency from the list. A marking feature is in-
cluded, to allow the user to highlight particularly reliable frequencies in
the list.
Smart R8 Control can use a mouse or trackball. If a mouse driver is in-
stalled, the program will allow most receiver functions to be changed with
a click to the "faceplate" window. A special tuning bar will allow the
user to tune the radio by the user defined stepsize, or nudge the radio by
.01 kHz. The help screen doubles as a master function list, selectable by
the mouse. Also, the Station, Frequency List and DX Shows windows allow
direct tuning with a mouse click.
Smart R8 Control imports version 3.0 of TRS Consultants' English Language
Shortwave Broadcast Database files. Registered users of Smart R8 Control
are entitled to the Import Utility v1.41, that will convert these files to
the Smart R8 Control format. Once converted, either the distribution data-
base or the imported TRS Consultants database can be selected. This can be
done from within Smart R8 Control, or by using the USE.BAT batch file from
the DOS prompt.
The distribution file SMCON141.ZIP should contain the following:
